Charlotte’s Web

Araneus cavaticus, barn spider is a member or the orb-weaver spiders native to North America.  And yes, this spider was the basis for the character Charlotte in E.B. White’s book Charlotte’s Web.  In the book, Charlotte’s full name is Charlotte A. Cavatica, a reference to its scientific name.

  1. I’ve always been too scared of spiders to actually observe them, but this photo is amazing. You can see all the little details, the hairs.. I don’t think people would use this word to describe spiders, but I actually find this one beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Another part of the character portrayal development of Charlotte’s Web is the behavioral pattern of the barn spider. It is nocturnal, spinning the web at night, and taking it down in the morning by ingesting the web in order to save on resource gathering. This behavior surely played into the authors imagination when writing the book.
