Arilus cristatus

This is the first wheel bug I have seen this year.  They are one of the largest terrestrial native bugs that can be found in North America reaching a length of up to 1.5 inches.  They are related and part of the Assassin bug family.  Wheel bug prey on caterpillars, Japanese beetles and other beetles including stinkbugs that are considered agricultural pest.  Welcome them into you garden for eco-safe pest control.  The are shy and usually reside in leafy hiding areas.
